East Alabama Medical Center EMS and Auburn Fire and Police responded to a late afternoon accident about 5:13 PM Sunday afternoon in Auburn that claimed the life of an Auburn woman.  Mary Hunta Owens, 85, of Auburn was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Joseph Yeager, 93, of Auburn that was struck in the passenger side. Yeager was air lifted by Lifesaver helicopter to Midtown Medical Center in Columbus. The driver of the SUV that struck the Yeager vehicle refused medical treatment at the scene. The driver of a third vehicle involved was not injured. The late afternoon sun could have been a vision factor in the accident. Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor. No postmortem exam is planned. The accident remains under investigation by the Auburn Police and the Lee County Coroner.

A preliminary investigation of the accident by the Auburn Police Division determined that the Oldsmobile was traveling south bound on Green Street and entered the intersection of Samford Avenue and collided with a Nissan Xterra traveling east bound on Samford Avenue.  After the initial impact, the Oldsmobile struck the Subaru, which was stopped at the intersection waiting to travel the opposite direction on Green Street.  The cause of the accident is still under investigation by the Police Division and the Lee County Coroner’s Office. Traffic in the area was temporarily re-routed while the accident was being investigated.
