Child Struck by Vehicle

On 3/18/2014 between (6:45 PM) and (6:52 PM), personnel of the Opelika Police and Fire Department responded to a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle in the 500 block of Fruitwood Circle. Investigation revealed a five year old child had been struck by a vehicle in the roadway after the child had walked away from an ice cream truck. Witnesses stated they saw a vehicle traveling on the roadway and swerving at a high rate of speed. After the child was struck the driver got out of the vehicle, then re-entered the vehicle and drove away. The child was suffering from a head injury and was flown by helicopter to Columbus Regional Hospital. A short time after the accident the driver of the vehicle turned herself in to the Opelika Police Department.


            The driver was identified as Chandra Marie Carlisle, age 33 of Opelika. She was later arrested and charged with Assault First Degree and Leaving the Scene of an Accident Involving Death or Personal Injury.


            The condition of the child is unknown at this time. The accident is still under investigation.
