Shooting in Lee County

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at approximately 1:00 PM/CDST on Wednesday March 12, 2014 reporting that shots had been fired near a residence on Lee Road 2105 just outside Phenix City. Responding deputies located witnesses who reported that they had observed a suspicious vehicle described as a pick up truck traveling down Lee Road 2105. The driver of the truck threw an object into the driveway of a residence and drove a short distance down the road, turned around , and proceeded  in a direction to leave . The resident of the house where the object had been thrown came out of his house armed with a shotgun and ran into the street to confront the driver of the truck. Witnesses stated that as the truck came toward him the resident fired at least two times into the front of the truck. The truck then proceeded out of the area. A brick was recovered from the driveway of the residence by investigators.  The driver of the truck was located in Phenix City. He told investigators that he was angered about a Face Book post that he perceived as derogatory and directed at him and had gone to the residence on Lee Road 2105 with a brick to throw at the house of the person he believed had authored the Face Book post. The driver of the truck was identified as  Zachery Heath Belitz (22) of Phenix City and he was transported to the sheriff’s office in Opelika by sheriff’s deputies. Belitz was charged with disorderly conduct in connection to the incident on Lee Road 2105. No one was injured as a result of the shooting. The incident remains under investigation and additional charges are possible.   Mr. Belitz is awaiting court action on charges of Indecent Exposure in Phenix City municipal court in an unrelated incident.
