Lee County Fatality

November 18, 2013

At approximately 1:15 PM, Sunday afternoon, authorities received a 911 call to a two vehicle accident at the intersection of Lee Road 262 and US Hwy 29 North, north of Opelika. Upon arrival of Beulah Volunteer Fire Department and EAMC EMS, they found 68 year old Carol Copeland Squires, of Demopolis, AL, with no signs of life. Lee County Coroner Bill Harris pronounced Squires dead at the scene from multiple blunt force injuries. The occupants of the other vehicle were not injured and declined medical attention at the scene. From witness accounts, it  appears that Squires was traveling west on Lee Road 262 when she apparently attempted a left hand turn onto US Hwy 29 North and was struck broadside by a 2004 Toyota Tundra driven by Joshua Adam Bryant of Opelika, traveling north on US Hwy 29. Occupants of both vehicles were apparently wearing seatbelts. Both vehicles left the roadway.  Alcohol was not a factor in the accident. The accident remains under investigation by the Lee County Coroner’s office and the Opelika Post of the Alabama State Troopers.
