Opelika Police Recover Stolen Property

On 11/12/2013, at approximately 10:02 AM, the Opelika Police Department received a call of a burglary in progress in the 400 block of Westwood Street. Officers responded to the area. The homeowner was at the residence at the time of the burglary. He yelled at the suspects and they fled the area, getting into a Sport Utility Vehicle. The victim reported two black males had attempted to burglarize his residence.


A short time later officers observed two black male subjects fitting the description of the burglary suspects getting out of an SUV on Pleasant Circle. One of the suspects fled on foot but was caught by officers. The second suspect fled into an apartment in the 300 block of Pleasant Circle. Investigators responded to the scene and were able to obtain search warrants for an apartment in the 300 block of Pleasant Circle as well as several vehicles parked at that location. When the officers searched the residence they were able to detain the second suspect who had previously fled from the officers. During the search of the residence and vehicles a large amount of property believed to have been stolen in numerous burglaries was recovered.



Investigators of the Opelika Police Department arrested two individuals in connection with this case. They have been identified as Rayfus Derrell Lockhart, age 25 of Auburn, and Martez Anthony Simmons, age 22 of Opelika. Both individuals are being charged with Burglary Second Degree, two counts of Burglary Third Degree, and two counts of Theft of Property First Degree.


                        Property has been recovered from burglaries that have occurred in Opelika, Auburn, and Phenix City. The case remains under investigation.
