Traffic Fatality

On 10-01-2013 at approximately (7:17 AM), officers of the Opelika Police Department responded to a reported single vehicle accident with injuries on Pepperell Parkway near 24th Street. Personnel from the Opelika Fire Department, and EMS also responded. Upon arrival, officers observed a gold in color Nissan Maxima in the grass on the eastbound side of the roadway next to a tree. Officers contacted the driver and he was transported from the scene to the East Alabama Medical Center by EMS. The driver, and lone occupant of the vehicle, was identified as Jeffery Montrel Lyles, Jr., age 20 of Opelika. Lyles later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the East Alabama Medical Center. The initial investigation revealed the victim’s vehicle was travelling east on Pepperell Parkway between N 25th Street and N 24th Street when it ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree. The cause of the accident is unknown at this time.
