Assault/Kidnapping in Opelika

On 8/28/2013 (7:38 PM), officers of the Opelika Police Department responded to the 500 block of Maple Avenue in response to shots being fired. Upon arrival contact was made with the victim, a 63-year old male from Opelika, who related he had been assaulted by an individual using a handgun. During the assault the victim related the handgun had discharged several times as he was being struck with it. The victim was not shot however he received several cuts to his head and was later taken to the East Alabama Medical Center for treatment of his injury. The suspect then grabbed a 43-year old female who was at the residence and forced her into a vehicle and fled the area. Approximately three hours later the female victim and the suspect were located on the front porch of a residence in the 300 block of Carver Avenue. The suspect was taken into custody without incident. The victim, who appeared to have been in a struggle, was taken to the East Alabama Medical Center for treatment and interviewed. The suspect has been identified as William Grenard Edwards, age 50 of Opelika. He has been arrested and charged with Domestic Violence Second Degree (Assault) and Kidnapping First Degree. The case is still under investigation.
