Robbery Investigation

On 8/23/2013 (4:51 AM), officers of the Opelika Police Department responded to the parking lot of 1801 Thomason Drive (Trustmart Bank) in reference to an individual who had been robbed and shot. Upon arrival officers located a white male lying on the ground with an apparent gunshot wound to his abdomen. Investigation revealed the victim, a 52 year old white male from Phenix City, had driven to the bank to make a deposit at the night drop. When he exited the vehicle he was approached by a black male holding a handgun. The suspect approached the victim and told him to give him the bag. The victim related he attempted to run but was shot by the suspect. The suspect then grabbed the money bag and fled the area on foot. The bag contained an undetermined amount of money. The victim was transported to the East Alabama Medical Center for treatment of his injury and is currently in surgery. His condition is unknown at this time. An individual in the area heard the gunshot and notified the police.
