Attempted Murder Arrest

On 8/14/2013, at approximately 5:13 AM, officers of the Opelika Police Department responded to a residence in the 4500 block of Anderson Road in reference to a burglary in progress call. Upon arrival contact was made with the victim, Julie Hawkins, age 47, who was bleeding and suffering from several cuts and stab wounds. According to Hawkins, her estranged husband, Kelly O’Neal Leonard, age 47, had broken into the residence, and began to beat her and cut her with a knife-like instrument. According to the victim she had been beaten and dragged throughout the house and eventually to the front yard. The victim was able to flee to a nearby residence and contact the police. The victim was taken to the East Alabama Medical Center for treatment of her injuries and she is currently listed in satisfactory condition.

 

Officers later located a vehicle being operated by Kelly O’Neal Leonard on Andrews Road and after a vehicle pursuit he was taken into custody on Lee Road 2184 at 5:40 AM in Salem, AL. Leonard is being charged with Attempted Murder and Domestic Violence First Degree (Assault First Degree). He is currently being held at the Lee County Detention Facility.

 

The case remains under investigation by the Opelika Police Department Investigative Services Division.
