Lee County Death Investigation

At approximately 7:41 PM CDST on Sunday night March 24 a 911 call was received by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office from a residence on Lee Road 308 near the Lee-Russell county line in north Phenix City. The caller reported a male subject who was nude had entered their home and was acting in a threatening manner. Lee County deputies responded and made contact with the nude suspect a short distance from the complainant’s home on Lee Road 308. The suspect refused to stop and ran toward Lee Road 427 , also known as Pierce Road.
The suspect ran to a residence in the 1800 block of Pierce road and attempted to enter as deputies made contact with him. The suspect was combative and deputies deployed a Taser device in an attempt to subdue him. The suspect continued to fight with deputies who were now being assisted by responding Phenix City Police officers and after a struggle that lasted more than 10 minutes the suspect was restrained but remained combative. Deputies were attempting to secure the suspect’s legs when he passed out. CPR was initiated and medical personnel were summoned to the scene and transported the suspect to the Jack Hughston Medical Facility in Phenix City at approximately 8:20 PM CDST. At 8:58 PM CDST the suspect was pronounced dead. Sheriff Jay Jones has requested the Alabama Bureau of Investigation to conduct an investigation into the circumstances of the incident as standard procedure when an in custody death occurs.
The suspect’s body has been transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for a post mortem examination. Efforts are now underway to identify the suspect described as a black male between 5 and 6 feet in height and weighing between 200 and 230 pounds with close cut hair and a slight beard and mustache.
