Inmate Death

January 15, 2013

On this date at approximately 1:00 pm CST corrections officers on shift at the Lee County Detention Center were alerted by inmates that an inmate was in his cell with cloth around his neck and was not moving. Officers responded to the cell and found the inmate with a sheet around his neck that had been wrapped at the other end to a cell bunk. The officers initiated CPR on the inmate and Opelika Fire department paramedics were called to assist. The inmate was transported to East Alabama Medical Center where efforts to revive him were not successful and he was pronounced dead by the ER physician at 1:35 pm CST. The inmate is identified as Ahmed Sharif Elbugdadi  (25) of Auburn.  Mr. Elbugdadi had been an inmate at the Lee County Detention Center for just more than 8 months since his arrest in May of last year on weapon discharge, reckless endangerment and terroristic threat charges after a several hour stand-off with Auburn Police and the county-wide SWAT team at his East University Drive residence.  Mr. Elbugdadi will be transported to Montgomery for a post mortem examination at the Department of Forensic Sciences. At the request of Sheriff Jay Jones the Alabama Bureau of Investigation has been contacted to initiate an investigation into the circumstances of Mr. Elbugdadi’s death.
