Over the past two months, the Lee County Sheriff's Office has been conducting an internal investigation regarding the introduction of contraband into the Lee County Detention Center. As a result of this on-going investigation, a former Lee County Correctional Officer was arrested on October 23, 2012 and charged with one count of Unlawful Distribution of a Controlled Substance (Class B Felony) and one count of Promoting Prison Contraband in the Second Degree (Class C Felony).
Former Correctional Officer, Dequinn Cortez Wright (30), of Opelika, was arrested at approximately 12:50 PM/CST Tuesday afternoon. Wright had been employed with the Lee County Sheriff's Office for approximately (10) ten years. He posted a ($10, 500.00) Ten Thousand Five Hundred Dollar bond and has been released from Lee County Detention Center. This case will be presented to a future Lee County Grand Jury. Wright was terminated from employment immediately following his arrest.
Sheriff Jay Jones stated, "We are disappointed that one of our officers would engage in conduct that has the potential to endanger the safety and security of our employees and the individuals detained at our facility. We are committed to doing all we can to insure professionalism in our operations and removing anyone who compromises our mission to protect the public." This case remains under investigation and the possibility of additional arrests exist.
