ALGOP Denounces Illegal Political Action Committee

July 11, 2010

Under the laws of the State of Alabama, any political action committee which receives and expends funds with the intention of influencing an election is required to file their financial statements with the Secretary of State. Currently, a group calling itself the “Conservative Coalition of Alabama” is running advertisements with the intention of influencing the Republican Primary Runoff. This group has failed to disclose both their identity and their funding, which is in direct violation of the law.

Rep. Mike Hubbard (R-Auburn), Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party, issued the following statement denouncing the group and calling on Democrat Party Chairman Joe Turnham to do the same.

“The Alabama Republican Party refuses to sit back and just watch this type of illegal activity in our election process. Today, we call on the Alabama Democrat Party to join us in denouncing the ‘Conservative Coalition of Alabama.’ Anything less would be condoning the illegal actions of this organization.

“This morning, we received a letter from Senator Jeff Sessions (R-Alabama) which also condemns the illegal activity of this group. The Party appreciates Senator Sessions’ willingness to speak out against this nefarious organization, and we urge all Republicans and Democrats to follow his lead.

“We are encouraged that the Attorney General has agreed to investigate, and trust that the investigation will result in these individuals being prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. It is a slap in the face to each and every voter in the State of Alabama for these shady forces to continue to thumb their noses at the law. We must not condone their actions by looking the other way.”
