US News & World Report has named Auburn on its 2009 list of the 10 best places to live. This year's list focused on affordable communities with strong economies and recreational opportunities for citizens. Citing Auburn as a "diamond on the eastern Alabama plains," the article notes the presence of Auburn University, outdoor recreational opportunities, and Auburn's proximity to top-rated golf courses as just a few of the reasons readers should consider Auburn.
"We are extremely pleased to learn of this ranking," said Mayor Bill Ham, Jr. "This article gives well-deserved recognition to Auburn University, a great partner with the City of Auburn. This partnership has resulted in projects such as the Auburn-Opelika Robert G. Pitts Airport, the City of Auburn/Auburn University Yarbrough Tennis Center, and the Auburn Research Park, which undoubtedly played a role in Auburn being named to this list. This is not a ranking of small towns, but rather the top 10 towns in the US. To see Auburn ranked among cities such as Austin, TX and Durham, NC is very gratifying. It seems the national media has confirmed what our citizens tell us every year in the Annual Citizen Survey: Auburn, Alabama has an exceptional quality of life."
